E NGINEERING is still a major industry in Scotland with electronics (and electronic data processing in particular) taking the leading role in attracting inward investment from such international companies as NEC, IBM, JVC,Mitsubishi and Motorola.

North Sea oil has created a revival in the heavy engineering and construction industries while traditional industries such as whisky and textiles remain crucial to the rural economies of the Highland and Border regions.

In recent years Science Parks have been set up at major Scottish Universities to facilitate the commercial application of research and technology to industry.
