R OBERT BURNS the patriotic bard, Sir Walter Scott, father of the historical novel and Robert Louis Stevenson, poet and novelist, remain the best known of Scotland's literary figures.

After English replaced Scots as the formal written language of educated Scots after the Union of the Crowns and later Parliaments in 1707, there was a backlash movement, championed by Burns, to recreate a national poetic tradition in the 18th century.

In more recent times the likes of Edwin Muir, Lewis Grassic Gibbon, Norman MacCaig and Hugh MacDiarmid have spearheaded a new lease of life in Scottish literature as leaders of the "Scottish Literary Rennaissance".
