S COTLAND, as part of the UK, elects 72 Members of Parliament to the House of Commons and in the 1992 General Election returned 49 Labour, 11 Conservative, 9 Liberal Democrat and 3 Scottish National Party members.

The Secretary of State for Scotland, a Cabinet Member, has ministerial responsibility for Scottish affairs and is head of the Scottish Office with HQ in Edinburgh.

The principal government law officer is the Lord Advocate who provides legal advice to government on Scottish issues and on the adaptation of legislation for Scotland.
