T HE unique natural beauty of the Scottish landscape and its rich wildlife, flora and fauna, led to the setting up of Scottish National Heritage in 1992 with specific responsibility for all nature and landscape conservation and countryside recreation in Scotland. Other main bodies concerned with environmental issues are the Scottish Wildlife Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds.

Some 38,000 listed buildings and over 5000 scheduled monuments are cared for by local authorities, Historic Scotland and the National Trust for Scotland.
